Indiana Association of Historians James H. Madison Best Indiana Magazine of History Article Award

The Best Indiana Magazine of History Article Award, given at the annual IAH Conference for the best scholarly article published in the IMH during the previous calendar year, is named in honor of James H. Madison, Thomas and Kathryn Miller Professor of History Emeritus at Indiana University Bloomington. Professor Madison is the dean of Indiana history, as his significant publications have shaped the way we interpret the state and its history. Among his many publications are Hoosiers: A New History of Indiana (2016), Slinging Doughnuts for the Boys: An American Woman in World War II (2007), and Lynching in the Heartland: Race and Memory in America (2001). A long-time member and supporter of the Indiana Association of Historians, Professor Madison served as president of the organization in 1991-1992.

A committee selected from the IAH Board and the IMH Board will select the recipient from all articles published in the calendar year prior to the annual meeting.  The award of $250 will be presented at the annual meeting.

Founded in 1980, the Indiana Association of Historians welcomes anyone interested in the study, enjoyment and promotion of history. As an organization, we bring together educators, scholars, genealogists, archivists, public historians, librarians and the general public interested in the pursuit of history. Our purpose is to provide a forum for professional historians to come together as a group for dialogue about the academic discipline they share, but the IAH is also committed to reaching out beyond the university community, or communities, to share the study of history with other professional historians and with the broader public.
